Student Visas (Subclass 500/590)
Who is It For?
For students who wish to come Australia to participate in a course of study and for guardians to support a child who holds a student visa.
Basic Eligibility
- Be enrolled in a registered course of study in Australia.
- Hold Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), or fall in one of the exemption categories.
- Must be 6 years or older.
- Prove you have welfare arrangments, if you are under 18.
- If in Australia, hold an eligibile substantive visa.

Student Visa (Subclass 500)
Visit Australia to participate in a course of study.
With This Visa You Can
- Participate in an eligbile course of study.
- Bring members of family unit to Australia with you.
- Work unlimited hours in any sector (limited to 48 hours per fortnight, starting 1st of July 2023).
Overview
Up to 5 years and in line with your enrolment. The type of course and its length will determine the length of stay. If you wish to stay longer than your initial visa’s legnth of stay, you must apply for a new student visa.
If you hold or held a student visa and completed specific qualifications in Australia in the last 6 months, you might be eligible for a Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485).
If you are a recent engineering graduate of a recognised institution you might be eligible for the Skilled Recognition Graduate Visa (Subclass 476).
This visa costs from AUD650.00 for the main applicant, unless they are exempt. There is also a charge for each family member who applies for the visa. You might also have to pay other costs for:
- Health checks
- Police certificates
- Biometrics
You can be in or outside Australia when you apply for the visa and when a decision is made on your application.
Foreign Affairs or Defence Sector:
- 25% of applications: 9 days
- 50% of applications: 18 days
- 75% of applications: 39 days
- 90% of applications: 5 months
Postgraduate Research Sector:
- 25% of applications: 26 days
- 50% of applications: 4 months
- 75% of applications: 7 months
- 90% of applications: 12 months
Non-Award Sector:
- 25% of applications: less than 1 day
- 50% of applications: less than 1 day
- 75% of applications: 6 days
- 90% of applications: 14 days
Schools Sector:
- 25% of applications: 15 days
- 50% of applications: 27 days
- 75% of applications: 3 months
- 90% of applications: 9 months
Independent ELICOS Sector:
- 25% of applications: 7 days
- 50% of applications: 21 days
- 75% of applications: 46 days
- 90% of applications: 4 months
Vocational Education and Training Sector:
- 25% of applications: 30 days
- 50% of applications: 3 months
- 75% of applications: 7 months
- 90% of applications: 14 months
Higher Education Sector:
- 25% of applications: 9 days
- 50% of applications: 23 days
- 75% of applications: 4 months
- 90% of applications: 10 months
- If you are a school student, you must be aged 6 or older to apply for this visa. You must also be:
- Less than 17 years old when you begin Year 9.
- Less than 18 years old when you begin Year 10.
- Less than 19 years old when you begin Year 11.
- Less than 20 years old when you begin Year 12.
- You must include evidence of enrolement in study with your student visa application.
- Applying outside Australia: provide a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for each course of study with your visa application.
- Applying in Australia: provide CoE or Letter of Offer for all intended courses.
- You don’t need to provide a CoE if you are:
- Enrolled in a full-time course of studying or training under a scholarship scheme approved by the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade- provide a letter of support.
- Sponsored by the Australian Department of Defence- provide a letter of support.
- A secondary exchange student- provide an Acceptance Advise of Secondary Exchange Student (AASES) form.
- A postgraduate research student who needs to stay in Australia while your thesis is marked- provide a letter from your education provider.
- Make welfare arrangements if you are under 18 years.
- Meet English language requirements. You must have taken the English language test in the 2 years before you apply for a student visa.

- You and your family members must be covered by Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) from an approved Australian health insurance provider for the whole of your stay. Exceptions include:
- A Norweigan student covered by the Norweigan National Insurance Scheme.
- A Swedish student covered by Kammarkollegeit.
- A Belgian student covered under the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia.
- If you are in Australia, you must hold an eligibile substantive visa, or apply:
- Within 28 days of holding a Student Visa, a Special Purposes visa, or a dependant Diplomatic (temporary) visa.
- Within 28 days of being notified by the Tribunal that your visa cancellation has been set aside.
- Note: a bridging visa is not a substantive visa.
- Have enough money for your stay.
- Be a genuine temporary entrant.
- Meet the character requirement.
- Meet the health requirement.
- If you are 18 years of age or older, you must:
- Have read, or have explained to you, the Life in Australia booklet.
- Sign an Australian Values Statement that confirms you will respect the Australian way of life and obey the Australian laws.
- Have paid back to your debt to the Australian Government.
- If you or any family members (including those who don’t apply for the visa with you) owe the Australian government, you or they must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back.
- You might not be granted this visa if you have had a visa cancelled or refused while you were in Australia.
- Visa may not be granted if it is not in the best interests of an applicant under 18.
The following condition(s) must be attached to this visa:
8105- Work restriction: 48 hours per fortnight starting 01/07/2023 (currently unrestricted).
8202- Meet course requirements.
8501- Maintain adequate health insurance.
8516- Continue to satisfy criteria for the grant of the visa.
8517- Maintain adequate arrangements for the education of your school-age dependants.
8532- Maintaining welfare arrangements for minors.
8533- Inform provider of address.
8208- No study change related to critical technology without approval.
Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590)
Come to Australia to provide care and support for a student visa holder who is under 18 years of age or older due to exceptional circumstances.
With This Visa You Can
- Come to Australia to provide care and support for a student visa holder who is under 18 years of age (or over 18 in exceptional circumstances).
- Care for more than 1 student.
- Study an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) for less than 20 hours per week, or any other study or training for no more than 3 months.
Overview
This is a temporary visa. You can stay in Australia until the date specified on your visa grant letter. The length of the student visa holder’s stay or when that student turns 18 is usually considered when deciding this date.
This visa costs from AUD650.00 for the main applicant. There is also a charge for each family member who applies for the visa with you. You might also have to pay other costs:

You can be in or outside Australia when you apply for the visa and when a decision is made on the application.
- 25% of applications: 29 days
- 50% of applications: 81 days
- 75% of applications: 8 months
- 90% of applications: 11 months
- If you apply in Australia, you must hold a substantive visa except for one of these:
- Domestic Worker (Temporary) Diplomatic and Consular Visa (Subclass 426).
- Temporary Work (International Relations) Visa (Subclass 403)- Domestic Worker (Diplomatic or Consular) stream.
- Diplomatic (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 995)- primary visa holder only.
- Transit Visa (Subclass 771).
- Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) in the Sponsored Family stream or the Approved Destination Status stream.
- Be a parent, custodian or relative of the student visa holder.
- Be able to provide for the student.
- Have enough money for your stay.
- If any member of your family unit has not turned 6, you can not be granted the visa unless:
- There are compelling and passionate reasons.
- Granting the visa would significantly benefit the relationship between the Australian government and the government of another country, you are 21 and if the student visa holder has not turned 18, the nomination is supported by a parent or someone with custody of the student.
- You must make adequate arrangements for the accomodation, support and welfare of any member of your family who:
- Is not coming to Australia with you.
- Is under 18 years of age.
- Does not have a student visa.
- It is considered that you have made adequate welfare arrangements for your children aged 6 to 18 years if they will be living with:
- Another parent or custodian.
- A relative who is at least 21 years old.
- You must maintain adequate health cover for the whole of your stay if you are granted this visa. Your insurance should cover you for medically necessary treatment, including transport.
- Be a genuine temporary entrant.
- Stay temporarily in Australia.
- Do the things you are allowed to do on this visa.
- Meet the health requirement.
- Meet the character requirement.
- You must:
- Have read, or had explained to you, the Life in Australia booklet.
- Sign an Australia Values Statement that confirms you will respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws.
- If you or any family members owe the Australian government money, you or they must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back.
- You might not be granted this visa if you have had a visa cancelled or refused while you were in Australia.
- Visa might not be granted if it is not in the best interests of an applicant under 18.
The following condition(s) must be attached to this visa:
8101- No work.
8201- Maximum 3 months study.
8501- Maintain adequate health insurance.
8516- Continue to satisfy the criteria for the grant of the visa.
8534- No further stay.
8537- Live with the student and provide for their accomodation, support and welfare.
8538- Not leave Australia without the student or without approval.
