Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482)
Who Is It For?
This temporary visa lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker to fill a position they can’t find a suitably skilled Australian to fill.
Basic Eligibility
- You must be nominated for a skilled position by an approved sponsor.
- Have the right skills to do the job.
- Meet the relevant English language requirements.
Select from one of the following streams:
Short-Term Stream (Subclass 482)
This visa enables employers to address labour shortages by bringing in skilled workers where employers can’t source an appropriately skilled Australian worker.
With This Visa You Can
- Work in Australia for up to 2 years for your sponsor or work in Australia for up to 4 years if an International Trade Obligation (ITO) applies, or up to 5 years if you are a Hong Kong passport holder.
- Study (you won’t receive government assistance).
- Travel to and from Australia as many times as you want while the visa is valid.
- If eligible, apply for permanent residence.
Overview
This is a temporary visa. You can stay in Australia for the period of time your employer nominates you for. This will be:
- Up to 2 years in most cases.
- Up to 4 years if an ITO applies but the maximum length will depend on the actual ITO relevant to your circumstances.
- Up to 5 years if you are a Hong Kong passport holder.
If your visa is expiring and you want to stay in Australia to work for your existing employer:
- Your employer will need to submit a new nomination.
- You must apply for a new visa.
Your employer may be able to sponsor you for permanent residence through the:
AUD1,330.00 for the main applicant and for each dependant 18 years and over. It costs AUD335 for each dependant under 18 years old. You will also have to pay for:
- English language tests
- Health checks
- Police certificates
- Biometrics
Usually, you can be in or outside Australia when you apply for this visa, but not in immigration clearance. However, you must be outside Australia if all the following apply:
- You have held more than one TSS visa in the Short-term stream.
- You hold a TSS visa in the Short-term stream and you were in Australia when you applied for that visa.
- Applying outside Australia is not inconsistent with an ITO.
If you are applying in Australia, you must hold:
- A substantive visa, or
- A Bridging visa A, Bridging visa B or Bridging visa C.
- 25% of applications: 8 days
- 50% of applications: 20 days
- 75% of applications: 37 days
- 90% of applications: 70 days
- If you are applying in Australia, you must hold:
- A substantive visa or
- A Bridging visa A, Bridging visa B or Bridging visa C.
- If you are in Australia at the time of decision, you must have substantially complied with any conditions that apply or applied to your last substantive visa or bridging visa held.
Before you can apply for a TSS visa, your proposed employer will need to submit a nomination application for you. They will only be able to do this if they are an approved sponsor or have at least submitted an application to become a Standard business sponsor.
- Your employer must have nominated you to fill an occupation specified on the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL).
- Australian business sponsor- you must be employed:
- In your nominated occupation.
- In that business or an associated entity.
- Overseas business sponsors- you must be employed:
- In your nominated occupation.
- In that business only (not an associated entity).
- If you are the primary visa applicant, you must demonstrate that you have the skills and experience necessary to perform the nominated occupation.
- Some applicants must undertake a skills assessment to demonstrate this.
- You must have at least 2 years relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field.
- Such work experience must be completed while working in the nominated occupation or performing tasks at the same skill level in a related field.
- Work experience gained in a related field would involve tasks which are the same or closely related to those of the nominated position you intend to work as outlined in the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZCO).
- Have a positive skills assessment if required.
- You must maintain adequate health cover for the whole of your intended period of stay if you are granted this visa.
- Meet the health requirement.
- Meet the character requirement.
- You must be a genuine applicant for entry and stay in Australia as a short term visa holder and have a genuine intention to stay in Australia temporarily and to comply with visa conditions attached to your visa– that is, you must be a ‘genuine temporary entrant (GTE)’.
- Paying for visa sponsorship refers to asking for, offering, receiving or providing a benefit in return for a sponsorship related event, whether the event occurs or not. You or any secondary applicants must not have, in the past 3 years, engaged in any such conduct. You may still satisfy this criterion if you have engaged in such conduct, and the Minister considers it reasonable to disregard it.
- Primary visa applicants must meet certain minimum standards of English language proficiency unless exemptions apply.
- You might not be eligible for this visa if you have had a visa cancelled or refused while you were in Australia.
- If you or any family members (including those who don’t apply for the visa with you) owe the Australian government money, you or they must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back.
- If you and any secondary applicants are 18 years of age or older, you must confirm that you will respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws when you agree to or sign an Australian Values Statement.
8501- Maintain adequate health insurance.
8503- No further stay.
Medium-Term Stream (Subclass 482)
This visa enables employers to address labour shortages by bringing in skilled workers where employers can’t source an appropriately skilled Australian worker. You must:
- Be nominated to work in an occupation on the list of eligible medium and long-term skilled occupations.
- Have at least 2 years relevant work experience in your nominated occupation or a related field.
- Have a relevant skills assessment if this is required for your occupation.
- Work only for your sponsor or associated entity, unless you are exempt.
- Meet minimum standards of English language proficiency unless you are exempt from needing to show this.
With This Visa You Can
- Work in Australia for up to 4 years for your sponsor or up to 5 years if you are a Hong Kong passport holder.

Labour Agreement Stream (Subclass 482)
This visa is for skilled workers nominated by employers who have a Labour Agreement. It lets you live and work in Australia temporarily. Labour agreements are developed between the Australian Government (represented by the Department) and employers. You must:
- Be nominated to work in a specified occupation under the terms of a Labour Agreement.
- Have at least 2 years relevant work experience in your nominated occupation or a related field.
- Have a relevant skills assessment if this is required for your occupation.
- Work only for your sponsor.
- Meet minimum standards of English language proficiency unless you are exempt from needing to show this.
With This Visa You Can
- Work in Australia for up to 4 years for your sponsor or up to 5 years if you are a Hong Kong passport holder.
- Study (no government assistance).
- Travel to and from Australia as many times as you want while the visa is valid.
Overview
This is a temporary visa. You can stay in Australia for the period of time your employer nominates you for. This will be up to a maximum of 4 years, depending on the:
- Terms in the labour agreement.
- The validity period of your visa.
Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years.
AUD2,770.00 for the main applicant and each dependant 18 years and over. AUD695.00 for each dependant under 18 years old. You will also have to pay for:
- English language tests
- Health checks
- Police certificates
- Biometrics
Usually, you can be in or outside Australia when you apply for this visa, and when we decide your application, but not in immigration clearance. If you are applying in Australia, you must hold:
- A substantive visa, or
- A Bridging visa A, Bridging visa B or Bridging visa C.
- 25% of applications: 15 days
- 50% of applications: 42 days
- 75% of applications: 74 days
- 90% of applications: 5 months
- The nominated occupation must be the subject of a labour agreement between the Commonwealth and the nominator.
- You must have had at least 2 years of work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field unless varied by the terms of the labour agreement.
- You must be nominated.
- Meet the health requirement.
- Meet the character requirement.
- Have the level of English language suitable for the nominated occupation. English language requirements equivalent to the short-term stream of the TSS visa will generally apply unless the labour agreement provides an English language concession.
- If you are 18 years of age or older, you must confirm you will respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws when you agree to or sign an Australian Values Statement.
- You must have adequate health cover for the whole of your stay to be granted this visa.
- If you or any family members (including those who don’t apply for the visa with you) owe the Australian government money, you or they must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back.
- You might not be eligible for this visa if you have had a visa cancelled or refused while you were in Australia.
