Who Is It For?
For tourists, business visitors or to visit family for 3, 6 or 12 months.
Basic Eligibility
- Be a genuine visitor.
- Have enough funds to support your stay and leave.
Select from one of the following streams:
Tourist Stream (Apply In Australia)
This visa stream lets you visit Australia as a tourist, to go on a cruise or to see family and friends.
With This Visa You Can
- Visit family or friends.
- Be here as a tourist, for a cruise, or for any purpose except business or medical treatment.
- Study or train for up to 3 months.
Overview
Up to 12 months.
You can stay for the period or dates specified on the visa grant letter. The length of your visa is determined on a case by case basis. This visa is either granted with multiple entry or no travel.
You may need to show there are exceptional circumstances if you want to stay in Australia:
- As the holder of one or more visitor visas.
- And for more than 12 consecutive months.
You can’t stay in Australia longer by extending this visa. You must apply for another visa.
This visa costs from AUD380.00 for each applicant. You might also have to pay:
- Other costs for health checks, police certificates and biometrics.
- A subsequent temporary application charge.
Eligible applicants can apply for this visa in Australia. If you apply in Australia, you must be in Australia when a decision is made on your application.
- 25% of applications: 4 days
- 50% of applications: 12 days
- 75% of applications: 18 days
- 90% of applications: 35 days
- You must meet the health requirement.
- You must meet the character requirement.
- You must have, or have access to, enough money to support yourself while you are in Australia.
- Be a genuine visitor:
- Stay only temporarily in Australia.
- Do only the things the visa allows you to do.
- Best interests of the child:
- Visa may not be granted if it is not in the best interests of an applicant under 18.
You can only apply online if you are in Australia and:
- Hold a substantive visa, or
- You substantive visa ceased within the last 28 days.
The following condition(s) must be attached to this visa:
8101- No work.
8201- Maximum 3 months study.
8503- No further stay.
8531- Must leave before visa expiry.
Tourist Stream (Apply Outside Australia)
This visa stream lets you visit Australia as a tourist, to go on a cruise or to see family and friends. It is the same as the above except for:
Apply Outside Australia
To be eligible for this visa, you must be outside Australia when you apply and when a decision is made on your application.
Eligibility
- Meet the health requirement.
- Meet the character requirement.
- You must have, or have access to, enough money to support yourself while you are in Australia.
- Be a genuine visitor.
- Best interests of the child.
- Pay your debts to the Australian government:
- If you owe the Australian government money, you must have paid it back, or have arranged to pay it back.

This visa costs from AUD150.00 for each applicant. You might also have to pay other costs for:
- Health checks
- Police certificates
- Biometrics
Sponsored Family Stream
This visa stream lets people who are sponsored, usually a family member, to come to Australia to visit their family members.
With This Visa You Can
- Visit family or friends.
- Be in Australia as a tourist, for a cruise or for any purpose except business or medical treatment.
- Study or train for up to 3 months.
Overview
This is a temporary visa. You visa may be granted for up to 12 months. The length of your visa is determined on a case by case basis and the things that are considered when determing the length of your stay period include:
- How long you want to stay.
- Why you want to stay in Australia.
This visa costs AUD150.000 for each applicant. You might also have to pay other costs:
- Health checks
- Police certificates
- Biometrics
You must be outside Australia when you apply and when a decision is made on your application.
- 25% of applications: 9 days
- 50% of applications: 16 days
- 75% of applications: 29 days
- 90% of applications: 37 days
- Meet the health requirement.
- Meet the character requirement.
- If you or your family member (including those who don’t apply for the visa with you) owe the Australian government money, you or they must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back.
- You must have, or have access to, enough money to support yourself while you are in Australia.
- Be a genuine visitor.
- Stay only temporarily in Australia.
- Obey any condition and stay period attached to your visa.
- Have a sponsor.
- Visa may not be granted if it is not in the best interests of an applicant under 18.
The following condition(s) must be attached to this visa:
8101- No work.
8201- Maximum 3 months study.
8503- No further stay.
8531- Must not remain in Australia after visa stay period ends.
Business Visitor Stream
This visa stream lets you visit Australia for business reasons.
With This Visa You Can
- Make general business or employment enquiries.
- Investigate, negotiate, enter into or review a business contract.
- Conduct activities as a part of an official government visit.
- Take part in a conference, trade fair or seminar. You can’t be paid by the organisers to take part.
- Undertake tourist activities.
You can’t:
- Work for or provide services to a business or ogranisation based in Australia.
- Sell goods or services directly to the public.

To be eligible for this visa, you must be outside Australia when you apply and when your application is decided.
- 25% of applications: 2 days
- 50% of applications: 6 days
- 75% of applications: 11 days
- 90% of applications: 21 days

- You must meet the character requirement.

- If you owe the Australian government money, you must have paid it back, or have arranged to pay it back.
- You must have, or have access to, enough money to support yourself while you are in Australia.
- Be a genuine visitor:

- Best interests of the child:
- Visa may not be granted if it is not in the best interests of an applicant under 18.
- Perform business visitor activities.
- As a business visitor you can:
- Make general business or employment enquiries.

Approved Destination Status Stream
This visa stream is for citizens from certain areas of China visiting Australia on a tour organised by an approved travel agent. You must:
- Be a citizen of the People’s Republic of China.
- Intend to travel to Australia as a part of a tour organised by an approved travel agent.
With This Visa You Can
- Enter Australia with your approved tour group.
- Participate in acitivities that are a part of your tour.
- Must leave Australia with your tour group before your visa expires.
Overview
This is a temporary visa. If your visa is granted, your visa grant letter will tell you how long you can stay for. The length of your tour is considered when determining your stay period. The visa is either granted:
- Single entry
- Multiple entry
This visa costs AUD150.00. You may also have to pay for other costs:
- Health checks
- Police certificates
- Biometrics
You must be in the People’s Republic of China when your visa application is lodged and when a decision is made on your application.

Frequent Traveller Stream
This visa stream is for citizens of the People’s Republic of China who travel often to Australia for business or personal reasons.
With This Visa You Can
- Visit family or friends.
- Be here as a tourist, for a cruise or a holiday.
- Undertake business visitor activities.
Overview
This visa can be granted for up to 10 years. You can enter into Australia as often as you like while the visa is valid but you can only stay:
- Up to 3 months each time you enter.
- For 12 months in total in any 24-month period.
Your visa grant letter will tell you how long you can stay.
This visa costs AUD1,120.00 for each applicant. You might also have to pay for other costs:
- Health checks
- Police certificates
- Biometrics
You must be in the People’s Republic of China when you apply. You must be outside Australia when a decision is made on your application.
Processing times can vary. Can vary for a range of reasons.
- You must meet the health requirement.
- You must meet the character requirement.
- Have paid back your debt to the Australian government:
- If you or any family members (including those who don’t apply for the visa with you) owe the Australian government money, you or they must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back.

- Support yourself while you are in Australia.
- Leave Australia at the end of your stay.
- Be a genuine visitor:

8115- Limited activities.
8201- Maximum 3 months study.

8516- Continue to satisfy the criteria for the grant of the visa.
8527- Must be free from Tuberculosis.
8531- Must leave before visa expiry.
8572- Must have a medical assessment.
8573- Must not stay in Australia for more than 12 months in 24 months.
8609- Notify new details.
